Around Flat Rock:

• Ford Flat Rock Assembly Plant. 2.9-million-square-foot plant built in 1972 as the Michigan Casting Center and later Mazda's first U.S. factory; the Ford Mustang has been assembled here since 2005.
• Ford lamp factory site. Ford's automotive headlight plant opened in 1923, powered by hydroelectric turbines on the Huron River.
• Flat Rock Dam and mill race. Huron River dam and mill race built by Henry Ford to power the lamp plant; their construction turned Huroc Park into an island.
• Vreeland settlement. Michael Vreeland and his five grown sons settled here between 1811 and 1820 and bought 800 acres; the town was called the Village of Vreeland until 1838, and the family built the first grain and lumber mill with grinding stones hauled from New York.
• Grosse Roche limestone outcropping. A French priest, Father Jean Dilhet, described the settlement as Grosse Roche in 1798, a name taken from the outcropping of limestone rock on the south side of the Huron River.
• Gibraltar and Flat Rock Land Company plat. The village was platted and recorded in 1838 by a company trying to build a canal that would connect Lake Erie with Lake Michigan; that canal was never finished.
• Flat Rock Pond. The 1924 Ford dam created a reservoir of about 188 acres, generally called the Flat Rock Pond, and the dam is still the last sizable one on the 130 mile Huron River, about 9.8 miles from the river mouth at Lake Erie.
• Wayne and Monroe county line. A very small part of the city lies in Monroe County because the boundary follows the course the Huron River took in 1923, the year Flat Rock became a village; the river's two meanders have since been filled in.
• Flat Rock Speedway. A quarter mile oval just south of the city in Ash Township, Monroe County, running since 1953 and owned by NASCAR, and the closest NASCAR style oval track to Detroit.
