What Novi is built of

Oakland County retail and convention hub; by local tradition the name comes from the 'No. VI' toll gate on the Grand River toll road, a story commemorated by Tollgate roads though historians consider it folklore. Also noted: Namesake of the Novi engine, the supercharged V8 that raced in the Indianapolis 500 from 1941 to 1966, named by owner Lew Welch for his hometown. About 23,001 households hold some 58,723 residents. Organized as a township in 1832 on land taken from Farmington Township; the name 'Novi' was proposed by resident Dr. J.C. Emery at the suggestion of his wife, who reportedly wanted a shorter name than Farmington.
